Green upgrades are coming

Big changes are on the way as we make our leisure centres greener, more energy efficient and fit for the future. Our Green Centre programme is bringing cleaner, smarter technology to help reduce carbon emissions and improve the way our buildings use energy.

Improving energy efficiency

Investing in energy-efficient technology to cut wasted energy and reduce running costs including installation of solar panels at selected centres.

Enhanced customer experience

Better air quality and temperature control will improve your experience every time you visit.

Safeguarding for the future

By investing now, we're protecting our centres from rising energy costs and helping secure sustainable centres for the future.

We start this summer!

Our Green Centre programme gets underway in August 2026, with the first upgrades taking place at Surrey Docks Fitness & Watersports Centre.

Other centre updates will roll out in phases from September, with programme completion expected by summer of 2027.

We'll be carrying out most of the upgrades while keeping our leisure centres open as usual. For some parts of the programme, short-term closures may be needed so we can complete the work safely and as quickly as possible. If this happens, we'll let members, clubs and everyone who uses our centres know as early as we can.

Green funding

Southwark Council has received significant external funding to deliver the scheme, securing £9.5 million from the UK Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which is run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and delivered by Salix. This is helping us to deliver this work earlier than we would be able to do otherwise, with limited costs to the council. The council is contributing £2.5 million as match funding. All the upgrades will save energy, and some of these will also save money. For example, between April and July 2025 our new solar panels at Peckham Pulse saved us £47,000 compared to the previous year.
